PRESENTED BY NOEL COPEMAN
BALCONYTV TORONTO IS BROUGHT TO YOU IN ASSOCIATION WITH INDIE WEEK AND THE UNDERGROUND GARAGE

Nightbox believe the invention of the drum kit has improved humanity's standard of living more dramatically than penicillin, sliced bread, and the wheel combined. The five band members have dedicated their life's work to the primal bliss that rhythm brings, and their labours have consistently borne joyous, funky fruit.

The fresh-faced five piece met in the halls of secondary school in Ireland, where the sounds of a post-punk revival - Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party, and the Killers - inspired the young lads to get serious about rock' n' roll. Since then, the scope of their influences has widened and their own musical vision has been refined. Their sound crystallized into a foot-stomping amalgam of punchy bass, chiming guitar, and dynamic synth, often girded with a four-to-the-floor kick drum. Frontman and songwriter Jake Bitove's melodies soar above the mix with an aplomb that belies his youth. Jake's brother Nick and Andrew Keyes drive the rhythm section with steady dance grooves and syncopated hits, while James Tebbitt's lead guitar utilizes a wide array of effects to create memorable, beguiling hooks. James Shelly integrates his electronic wizardry and sizzling synthesizers to produce a sound that has Canadian audiences subscribing to Nightbox's brand of rump-shaking dance-punk in droves. Complemented by three-part harmonies, the band's live performances exude an energy and insistence that win over even the most casual listener.

The band has spent a year in Toronto building a strong fanbase via uproarious gigs at all of the city's premier live music venues. They have recently finished recording an EP produced by two local legends - MSTRKRFT's AL-P and Death From Above 1979's Sebastien Grainger, and the resultant tracks distill all the hedonistic catharsis of the discotheque into the most exuberant fifteen minutes of music you'll hear this year. Check out Nightbox- because seeing, and hearing, is believing.
