Luke did the same thing for Robert, (minus the smack) when O'Reilly died and Luke knew that if he didn't act quick, the grief would cripple Robert when he NEEDED to act, both for the GREATER good of saving the world from what the Cassidines were planning, and to keep a promise to a friend.
