At least 37 people have been killed after Iraqi security forces stormed a Catholic church in central Baghdad to free dozens of hostages being held by gunmen there, security sources say.

Twenty-five hostages were among the dead, along with se...ven members of the Iraqi security forces and at least five of the attackers, they told the BBC.

About 100 people had been inside Our Lady of Salvation for an evening Mass.

The gunmen had reportedly demanded the release of jailed al-Qaeda militants.

The local TV station, al-Baghdadiya, said it had received a phone call from someone claiming to be one of the attackers, who said they were from the Islamic State of Iraq, a Sunni militant umbrella group to which al-Qaeda in Iraq belongs.

Reports said the attackers were not Iraqis, but foreign Arabs.

The raid came two days after a suicide attack on a cafe in Diyala province left 21 people dead.

'Priest killed'

Residents of Baghdad's Karada district, where the attack took place, first heard a loud explosion at about 1700 (1400 GMT), followed by gunfire.

Police said a group of armed men began by attacking the Iraq Stock Exchange building, and then took over the Catholic church just across the road, clashing with guards and killing some of them.

Security forces later surrounded the church and sealed off the area, with helicopters hovering overhead. Then they stormed the building.

Witnesses nearby said they then heard two explosions from inside the church and more shooting.

One eyewitness, who was inside the church, was quoted by the AFP news agency as saying that the gunmen "came into the prayer hall and immediately killed the priest".

The witness, who declined to give his name, said the people in the church had huddled into the main prayer hall when the gunbattles began with the security forces.

The gunmen reportedly threw grenades and blew their suicide vests.

There were no negotiations with the gunmen before the security forces stormed the church, reports suggest.

Witnesses also say they saw US troops on the ground and US military helicopters hovering above the scene, but the extent of their involvement is not yet clear.

"The operation has finished and we released all the hostages," said the commander of police in south-eastern Baghdad, Brig-Gen Ali Ibrahim.

The BBC's Jim Muir in Baghdad says there are different figures from different sources for the number of hostages and attackers involved, and how many of each were killed or captured.

Earlier reports said that two security guards at the stock exchange had been killed before the attackers occupied the church.

Many churches have been bombed in recent years - including Our Lady of Salvation in August 2004 - and priests kidnapped and killed, but there has never been a prolonged hostage situation like this before, our correspondent says.

There are about 1.5 million Christians from ancient denominations in Iraq.

Iraqi Christians have been leaving the country in droves since the US-led invasion in 2003.

@Fishing6Productions i hope u dont mind if we kill u.s or nato soldires ???? and i am verry verry proud and lucky to be a muslim but u know what i also tried to know about other religions cause i want to pray in the front of the god not in the front of messenger of god or animals but i realize that i already have the best religion worship a real god my advise is for all non muslim that prove anything wrong from quran or accept it nd wht i mention in my comment ill all non muslim is a halfconcept

@a1b2c3d4432ify I assume you're a Muslim , right ? from what you're saying , Qur'an says Kill in the name of god who ever steps over your rights or kills you , not kill all non muslims all over the world .

@Fishing6Productions u have lack of knowledge about islam and it cause of corrupted media and propoganda,s when the king of mecca stolen the properties money and shops of our prophet and his companians that time our prophet was in madina a verse came that fight fight in the name of god and remove them from where they removed you first time our prophet fight with kuffar called by jang e badr and now situation is more worst they killed 6 million muslim in afghanistan and 1.5 million in iraq

@yasm2002 لا ايران تعتبر استثناء , لأنهم يتبعوا المذهب الشيعي الذي يشذ اصلا عن المذهب السني -كما يقال- و انا لا افقه فيه شيئا .. فمن قال لا اعرف فقد افتى وانا لا اعرف شيئا عن المذهب الشيعي .

اضافة إلى ان الاسلام لا يستخدم القوة في كل شئ , فالشخص اذا ارتد لا يقتل يلجأ الناس للحوار اولا و لأن الاسلام دين متكامل -قد نختلف في هذة النقطة- فلا يوجد سبب لتركه

@yasm2002 هذا شئ لا يحدث هذة الايام لكن من وجهة نظري شخصيا الاسلام هو الدين الصحيح بالنسبة للمسلمين , و تركه لا يعد بالامر المُبرر فمعظم من يتركوه يتركوه لشئ مادي كالزواج بأخرى طلبت منه تغيير ديانته او مثلا مبلغ معين من المال و قد تعتبريني متطرف ولكني ارى ان الذي يتخلى عن دينه مقابل شئ مادي لا يستحق الحياة في الآساس و ان كان غير مسلم

ماذا يقول الاسلام؟

الشخص الذي يترك الاسلام يرسلوا له إمام ليتحاور مع و يرى اسبابه الغير مبررة لترك الاسلام و يصححها له ثم يترك بضعة ايام وحده ليفكر فإن ارتد يقتل

@yasm2002 أخد تعاليم متطرفة لا تمثل الدين الاسلامي , الاسلام فيه توازن , فيه آيات تدعوا للجهاد , و فيه آيات اكثر تدعوا إلى السلام و الاحسان للآخرين و المساواة , هؤلاء المتطرفين يستخدمون آيات الجهاد و يتجاهلون الآيات الاخرى , و ذلك ليس معناه ان كل المسلمين بنفس الكلام , فبدل ان تركزوا على المتطرفين من المسلمين , ركزوا على من يدعوا للسلام و المحبة و اقرأوا في تاريخ الاسلام إن اردتم على مواقع اسلامية معتدلة و ليست متطرفة , ولا تنسي من له المصلحة في ان يعرض لكم الجانب المتطرف فقط لكي نبقى في عداوة

كلام جميل ...لكن حسب المثل الذي قلته فالقبطي المجنون الذي يقتل لا يمثل ألدين المسيحي ولم ياخذ تعليم القتل من الكنيسة أو الانجيل .... أما الذي يقطع راس صحفي أمريكي ويصرخ الله او أكبر والذي يحرق كنيسة في العراق ويناديهم بالكفرة أو الذي يهجر يهود العراق،، هولاء أخذ تعليمهم من خطب الجمعة والكتب الاسلامية

واسامة بن لادن لم يقاتل العدو بل قتل ناس امنين في أعمالهم .. لذلك اسمها غزوة نيويورك وقال أيات من القران .. غزوة هي الهجوم على ناس وهم غير مستعدين ، مثل صدام على الكويت
