  • The poem's title is in fact, Heritage. The repeating line of "So I lie", easily had two meanings for him. I have always found it to be a beautiful and revealing poem. As with many of Cullen's poems, it expressed the duality of being black in America. He also saw this in being a black Christian. He was my favorite from the Harlem Renaissance period.

  • Thanks for that correction and we're glad you enjoyed the clip.
