  • agree...but for some reason.(teacher not willing to say) our's exploded when we added the match after waiting for the alcohol to vapourize ...=P

  • We do this as a demo in our Chem II class. Methanol (Methyl Alcohol) has worked the best for us. The longer you wait for the alcohol to vaporize, the better the effect will be, swirling the jug around in your hands can speed this.

    Something else we tried was to add a little pep to ours. We used lithium nitrate (or other nitrate compounds could work) dissolved in the methanol. The nitrate makes it combust MUCH faster (similar to your last take), and the lithium can add a swirl of red flames.
