smart's engineers worked hard to build a massive amount of advanced safety systems into the smart fortwo's small frame. But when people buy cars, the engineering (speak and statistics) show only half of the picture. The real stories are about how a person was protected by her vehicle or, even better, how someone avoided an accident altogether with the nimbleness of his small car.

And remember, simulated lab tests only go but so far. If you want to see the true safety of a vehicle, just look at real world crashes.
The IIHS rated the 2008-2010 smart fortwo:
Front: GOOD
Side: GOOD
Roof: GOOD
Rear: ACCEPTABLE (slight delay in seatbelt tensioner on passenger side)
The NHTSA rated the 2008-2010 fortwo:

- Paseenger = 3 Stars (slight seatbelt tensioner delay)
Side:

- 4 Stars
Rollover:
- 3 Stars
The European NCAP rated the 2007-2011 fortwo:
Overall:
- 5 Stars
The 2011 model (8 full airbags in US model) has yet to be tested by the NHTSA or IIHS but is bound to get a better score.
