"...a rose [b]y any other name would smell as sweet;" --William Shakespeare
The name of a sport is pretty irrelevant when one thinks about it. Obviously European soccer bears much more truism to the name than does the Americanized sport. However, both cultures practice and follow their football to a religious degree and I see neither inclined to refer to their sport by another name any time soon. And ultimately, who cares?

In soccer virtually every position except the keeper is interchangeable to some degree. In fact, many professional midfielders and defensive players were former strikers on their high school and club teams. The inability to use hands or arms is a neat twist, but it makes grasping the ball impossible and thus contributes to constant change of possession; this slows down the sport considerably and decreases the relevance of each big play.

Listen, I'm played soccer since I can walk, I'm a certified referee, I've even coached the sport. My high school never had a football team, but won back-to-back state championships in soccer. I know the sport of soccer incredibly well. However I find football much more strategic, physically punishing, and entertaining.

@harrydosoo1971 I did not know that the Chinese invented it... but I knew that the English did.

actually the Chinese invented football...the English provided the rules for the modern game we know as football.
England created the sport FOOTBALL, so obviously it's called FOOTBALL NOT SOCCER!
