By "grow double" he means become stooped with a bent back. A throstle is a song thrush. "Those Barren Leaves" was used as the title of a book by Aldous Huxley.

"Scholar at the Table" was painted by Emile Charles Wauters (1846-1933)

"Woodland Scene" was by Narcisse Diaz de la Pena (1807 - 1876 )

The yellow field is next to my garden in Dorset, England.

The last picture is of Wordsworth's cottage.

UP! up! my Friend, and quit your books;
Or surely you'll grow double:
Up! up! my Friend, and clear your looks;
Why all this toil and trouble?

The sun, above the mountain's head,
A freshening lustre mellow
Through all the long green fields has spread,
His first sweet evening yellow.

Books! 'tis a dull and endless strife:
Come, hear the woodland linnet,
How sweet his music! on my life,
There's more of wisdom in it.

And hark! how blithe the throstle sings!
He, too, is no mean preacher:
Come forth into the light of things,
Let Nature be your teacher.

She has a world of ready wealth,
Our minds and hearts to bless--
Spontaneous wisdom breathed by health,
Truth breathed by cheerfulness.

One impulse from a vernal wood
May teach you more of man,
Of moral evil and of good,
Than all the sages can.

Sweet is the lore which Nature brings;
Our meddling intellect
Mis-shapes the beauteous forms of things:--
We murder to dissect.

Enough of Science and of Art;
Close up those barren leaves;
Come forth, and bring with you a heart
That watches and receives.

  • Could you please keep the images with the lines a little longer so that we have enough time to read them?Thank you very much,your reading is very good.

  • @ChristinaDarkRose This formila seems to work best. You can always pause the video if you want to look closer.

  • Beautiful. And perfect to get one outside on this beautiful spring day in north central Florida, where the camellias, japanese magnolia, and red buds are still in bloom,and the azaleas are just beginning to bloom. Love the pictures you chose, especially the yellow field adjacent to your back garden. Thank you.

  • @thissong4you I don't thank you enough for your comments, though I am always gratified to read them. North central Florida I know quite well - in fact I have a house in Deltona. The flora is very different from Dorset, England where I live for most of the year. Thnak you for your constant and most welcome support.
