Brelo

The kantele ensemble Brelo comes from the village of Laukkoski in southern Finland. The group consists of seven musicians born in the late 80s. Brelo was officially formed in 2003 but most of the members had been playing together for years before. Brelo's repertoire includes traditional melodies and own compositions coloured with improvisation. Most of the songs are also arranged by Brelo. Due to Brelo's extraordinary instrumental composition (seven kanteles, mainly 15-stringed and concert kanteles but also singing and kanteles from Saarijarvi) Brelo has quite a unique sound. Brelo has released three albums: "Brelo" (2003), "Seitti" (2006) and "Uusikuu" (2009). In 2005 Brelo won their respective class in the national kantele competition in Jyvaskyla and were chosen as the kantele group of the year. In July 2006 they had a special status at the Kaustinen Folk Music Festival. Brelo's second album "Seitti" was chosen as the kantele album of the year.
