Huye Long is was a rockin American. I do disagree with his regulation of the pursuit of happiness (making a lot of money if that's your thing). Regardless he was rockin!

@CelticSouthland Take it easy there, Walt Disney. He was murdered by the son of someone he was trying to remove from a judgeship in Louisiana. Judaism never entered into it, and Huey Long was a person of tolerance.

@MrBrinkle Yeah most states economy did collapse. That's why they called it the great depression. His racism? Irrelevant, unless you're going to tell me he wasn't excercising the general consensus of Louisiana at the time-right or in this case clearly wrong. And the fact of the matter our entire federal government is unsustainable.

@stehenallein Keep in mind the state's economy did collapse, albeit at a later date. While I do admire Long for some things (though his racism can be uncomfortable), his economic policies were unsustainable within the system.

On the other hand, it was a system he worked to change.

@sydneygayboi He was, though this didn't really interfere with his governorship. He did remove the poll tax, which enfranchised many poor blacks (albeit more as a consequence). He also attacked the Ku Klux Klan, though it was popular at the time.

However, this does not excuse blatant racism. He did make several inexcusable remarks about the nation being a "White Man's Country" and used African-Americans as a boogeyman to scare whites into voting for him.

A complex character, to say the least.

The JP Morgans and John D Rockefellars never worked a day in their life. Banks shouldn't be a buisness. This is why people like Jesus Christ said it is a bad idea to loan money at interest.
