After galloping around the mainline network at breakneck speed for much of her young life so far, new-build Peppercorn A1 60163 'Tornado' has arrived for a relaxing little holiday on the North York Moors railway. Here she is sporting a set of LNER teak coaches (plus a couple of maroons) on the saturday mid-afternoon service from Grosmont to Pickering. Location: 500m north of Levisham station.

  • A nice bit of filming (at Raindale/Yorfalls Wood.)

Sadly lack of a tripod spoilt the start of the zoom out.

  • Don't I know it! My normal trick is to lie on a station platform and rest my elbows on the platform, but I couldn't do that here. I filmed this just on the wrong side of the fence on a public footpath which crosses the line at this point, so I couldn't really make my presence too 'permanent' by setting up a tripod.

  • We arrived on the Sunday when, instead of the expected Tornado, the first arrival at Pickering was hauled by a mere class '37' diesel!

Apparently the 'A1' had failed due to a washout plug?

Hope to see it on the NYMR the following weekend.

  • Yes, she failed later on this very journey - she seems to have been back in action since then, so hopefully you will see her when you return, and I think she's due to run some trips along the esk valley line to Battersby as well. The NYMR's souvenir brochure (for a modest cost) details exactly which engines are scheduled to haul which trains during the gala period.
