Diane Stewart died after knee replacement surgery at Stanford Hospital in 2007. But a key portion of her electronic medical record (EMR) was deleted, perhaps in an attempt to escape responsibility for her death. SB 850 (Leno) would require any inadvertent or intentional changes or deletions in a patient's EMR to remain part of the record to improve patient safety and provider responsibility.
