EmploymentCrossing.com California Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi is calling on the states college students to help drive down fees and tuitions. Garamendi spoke at a UC Davis College Democrats rally in front of an audience of about 85 people. "A free public education no longer exists in California," he said. "The taxes that were increased in this [state] budget were miniscule except for one. The single biggest tax increase was a tax on students." Garamendi, who is also a regent of the University of California, said the only way to stop fee increases was for students to stand up for themselves. "Ten thousand young men and women did not enter the state university system this fall because there was inadequate funding, Garamendi told the school paper. Four years from now those are 10,000 engineers, nurses, teachers, social workers, philosophers, writers, journalists who will not be available to work in the California economy." Garamedi did not mention how many philosopher jobs would remain unfilled. Garamendi announced in July that he would run for governor of California in 2010, when Arnold Schwarzenegger's term expires.
public education is for the masses, the middle class. without it, this country becomes dumber, people have less leisure time to think about politics, or care and we will teeter into a country with less participating in democracy. this abodes bad fortune for the democratic ideal and pushes America ever more towards an oligarchy....where the privileged like GW Bush can go to YALE and HARVARD BUSINESS SCHOOL, even if he is a loser, and to prevent other smart people from ever having the time 4 schl

it's amazing how everything has to be so costly in America...undergraduate education in Europe, South America, China, Korea, Japan are all FREE! In fact, even graduate programs and medical school is FREE! Imagine that! Only in America do capitalists find a way to charge for everything, whether it's loan sharks driving up the cost of paying back tuition, money that we taxpayers pay to loan to students, or it's rising tuitions because professors get ridiculous salaries, everything is more here

first of all, a public education like a private education sucks...because the professors only care about research and their PH.D students. Second, while I think education is being inflated in ways that are inefficient, we need to restructure education so that it can be online and cheaper for students to access. Third, while some people might argue that education is not a "right" but in the long run this country is better off giving everyone an affordable option to become educated over none
