I live in SLC and my husband works at church office-i've seen the original stuff and there's lots of misquotes on the net. even from B YOUng-he says its his speculation-not revelation.I've been able to meet with apostles (and even Pres. Hinckley before he died)&honestly,I've taken the chance to ask about this stuff. But,I can see where youre coming from.there'sLOTS of distortions out there.Youreally have to check out the original stuff in the library here.
"Blacks and the Mormon Church" in search engine. You will see various quotes of the so called prophets of the past, especially Brigham Young. The are very racists. People have to call it what it is, no matter how they try to cover it up. The church was getting pressure from IRS in 78, that they will lose their Tax exempt status if they continued their segregation policy. The church built a temple in Brazil, with contributions from Many blacks, and they were not going to be denied entrance
there was lots of speculation in the early church about why there were different races. that was never doctrine-its never been verified by any of the prophets. But, true, many took some early church writings by other prominent leaders as truth. I've also been Mormon for nearly 30years and have seen those earlier writings disavowed. Just to let ya know.
