  • How do you understand the blackbelt? I understood it as meaning you are ready to become an instructor. i.e. not just that you are an expert in all the techniques, and can compete with existing blackbelts, but that you can teach new students and invent new techniques.

  • @TheBillerson I understand the BlackBelt,as graduating highschool.I see it as the most basic level of expertise understanding of the physical elements of martial arts training. The blackbelt does not signify a teacher or coaching status, nor does it confer the title of master.A 2nd-3rd degree is like a college certificate or bachelors in university. One knows the material in theory and conceptually becomes more adept.A 4th-6th degree is much like a masters in university (page 1)

  • @TheBillerson The 7-10 degree is a professor, and adept at martial arts.A creator of new techniques and advancements on theory and concepts.A Black belt that contributes to the system,or to the martial arts community.I believe too many consider their 1st degree black belt as instant status of a teacher,as a coach,as a mentor and this is sadly not the truth at all.

  • My BJJ instructor often mentions "I don't care if you learned the submission in this technique--really I'm just trying to get you to practice the movement in the setup. But if I have you guys practice the movement for half an hour then you'll get bored and stop coming!"

In other words, there's a pedagogical aspect of how to teach people--the direct route is not always the most effective.

So I do drills at home.

  • @TheBillerson There are very specific methods to teaching, coaching and mentoring separate from any syllabus that is in a martial arts program. In canada we have the national coaching certification coaching program. We also have the praise correct praise system.I personally follow Bruce K Siddles theory on teaching methodology.

  • @TheBillerson i removed your comment by accident, can you repost?I do not look at JuJutsu as a sport.I was merley reflecting on the training process we use to develop athletes, and fitness. In my opinion i believe this goes hand in hand with martial arts training and combat training. If we send soldiers into war with weapons and the skill sets to take life in 6 months to a year of training.A black belt in less then ten years should be a cake walk.
