Banda Black Rio was the first band to place Brazilian Jazz-Funk on the international scene, back in the late seventies and early eighties . The old band influenced many well-known acts like Jamiroquai, Simply Red and Incognito. Since the beginning of the year 2000, William Maghales, virtuoso keyboard player and Oberda's son, reformed the band and embarked on his crusade. The aim is not only to continue his fathers legacy but also liberate the sound and soul of Rio de Janeiro. They want to show to the world Rio's latest solid grooves, the Jazz-Funky-Samba in this new era post Acid Jazz, Drum & Bass and other techno grooves. They have developed a Samba-Funky sound that belongs to Rio like reggae to Kingston (Jamaica). It has brass, keyboards, guitars, vocals, percussion and more brass. Everything shakes and sparkles like a mosquitos tweeter. Lucio, the sweet and sexy trombone sound, was part of that late seventies scene and he is in this new formation. Cassiano, a legend in his own time, wrote and collaborated with William on the new funky tunes. To hear the band is to be transported to a mix of Rio's leafy suburbs, sea, caipirinha, string bikinis and beach football. It is the multi-racial crowd and Saturday nights galore. It defines the struggle for a highly crafted musical expression and the dance all night desire. We could be in Rio, it is hot and the band is playing till dawn. Recorded in the finest studios in Rio this was a no expense spared on this last of the big budgets albums. From Rio the music floated up to Hackney, the home of maestro Raj Gupta (Block 16 , Faze Action et al) and Wembley, the home of Toni Economides the mastermind behind Da Lata and Nitin Sawney. Then Faze Action brothers, Robin and Simon Lee deliver a storming mix of Magia. Bringing some of that old disco magic from the 70's.
