Twenty two minutes after she was asked to cover for her ailing friend, Luciano Pavarotti, Aretha Franklin takes the stage to perform the legendary aria "Nessun Dorma", a piece she sang previously a few days earlier (in her own register, I might add), without changing Pavarotti's key - which is no minor achievement. It begets one of the most extraordinary musical moments in awards show history. It brought the audience to a thunderous ovation.

  • This is my favorite Grammy moment ever! The last minute fill-in, the convergence of 2 completely different styles, and the delivery of the Queen of Soul made this stunning. It's not about her singing it perfectly, or singing it in an operatic style; it's about the emotion of the lyrics, the soaring aria, and the passion of the singer. I still get chills to this day watching this. Thank you for posting!!

  • I was watching this the night the awards show was being telecast. When Sting announced who was originally supposed to perform, what song, and then the whopper, who was going to fill in, I immediately said to myself, OMG this will be a disaster. Why were tears rolling down my cheeks by the end of the song? I was COMPLETELY wrong and totally blown away!

  • WOW!

  • All Hail the Queen...

  • This is why I say there will only be one true diva, the rest will be princesses

  • QUEEN OF SOUL. A lot of soul went into this. Brava.

  • Still a pretty lady with an absolutely unique, beautiful voice. Yay, Aretha!

  • a little part of me just died...

    QUEEN OF SOUL NOT OPERA

  • best voice of all time!

  • I majored in Philosophy, and although I love being black, and would be called a radical by some, this woman singing Nessun Dorma made me so proud, I cried. I find it hard to stay composed no matter how many times I see it. Viva la Aretha!

  • @mongoardath1 I think titles are so overrated and undeserved for the most part, but Micheal was the "King of Pop", Bruce is "The Boss" and Aretha is "The Queen of soul"
