"In the great vision in the Kirtland Temple, Elijah the prophet appeared to the Prophet Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery and committed the keys of temple work and the sealing power into Joseph Smith's hands. This fulfilled Malachi's prophecy that Elijah would be sent 'to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the children to the fathers, lest the whole earth be smitten with a curse' (see D&C 110:1415)."So what does this mean? To turn our hearts to our fathers is to search out the names of our deceased ancestors and to perform the saving ordinances in the temple for them. This will forge a continuous chain between us and our forefathers eventually all the way back to Father Adam and Mother Eve."The heart of an 11-year-old boy was turned to his fathers during a family home evening when the children assembled personal books of remembrance. Young Jeff wanted to accompany his mother to the National Archives. She was afraid he might disturb the other researchers there. But he persisted, and she relented and took him with her. Four hours into their research, he exclaimed, 'Mama, I've found Grandpa!' Indeed, he had found his great-great-great-grandfather. However, it doesn't always work that way. In a letter to the Family History Department, someone wrote: 'We lost our grandmother. Will you please send us a copy?' "

Sunday's cornerstone ceremony was the only public part of the day's three dedication services for the temple, which is different than church's more common meetinghouses used for public worship and activities.

Following the dedication, only worthy LDS members can enter a temple, where church members believe Jesus Christ's teachings are taught and ordinances for members and their deceased ancestors are performed to unite families for eternity.

Labeled the former USSR's "bread basket," the agriculturally rich Ukraine is well-known for its fertile soil and its abundant wheat and grain fields.

The temple's spire stands 42 meters tall — nearly 138 feet high — and is topped with a gilded Angel Moroni statue. Just beneath the sphere upon which the statue stands is a series of flashing red lights that are turned on at night, since the temple is located near a small, local airport.

The same rings true for The 5 Browns, a piano-playing quintet of brothers and sisters from Utah. Their performances entice all ages and lovers of classical and non-classical music.

One of the great things about this gig is I get to see people being people. On the one hand, people can be a little pretentious in the context of worship, although the purpose of that escapes me, since if theres anyone who knows what a person is all about, its his or her god. On the other hand, I get to see people loving their families, children acting out, worshippers quite literally baring their souls.

As these scriptures so aptly state, the reflection of the Savior, the great Architect of our worlds and peoples, is visible if you will look carefully through the windows.

This past week adoptive parents, seeking for documents they have struggled years to obtain, have camped out in the halls of the U.S. embassy unable to get movement. Lindsay Crapo, who is on the board of an orphanage run by Guesmo Mardy, a counselor in the Haiti mission presidency, said she had spent every day, all day at the U.S. Embassy, including 16 hours the day we arrived with no progress.

Yet the glacial movement of the adoption process is not Haitis alone; the rules by which the United States operates are full of hurdles and their plate is full dealing with Haitis chaos.
