I got him to smile a couple of times at a Gutter Twins concert in 08.

i remember seeing him preform and smiling,,was the highlight of my year

I saw him with Greg Dulli yesterday here in Athens, he said "thank you" twice and he clearly smiled for 4 - 5 seconds during one of the last songs.
He reminds me what Miles Davis used to say - "these people come to listen to me playing, not see me or hear me talking". He could show he is actually enjoying himself from time to time, though.
And, yes, he is one of the best voices out there, along with Tom Waits.
