Here is my arrangement of 'Orange Peel'. This organ funk song comes from the great organist Reuben Wilson's record 'Blue Mode', released in 1969.

The song is built upon a syncopated bassline keeping the groove in C at all times, and to that a 4 bar melody riff/melody phrase is added. The melody phrase is played by a saxophone on the original recording. I play the melody phrase chorded, first after the bass line intro, then after the first solo chorus and during the ending. The rest of the song is filled up with riffs of my own, and I will also take the blame for the repeated one note right hand Intro and the one note right hand Outro :-)

----------
The organ is a Clavia Nord C1 - a Hammond B-3 clonewheel organ.

Nord C1 Registrations and Settings:
Upper 88 0800 000. No Vibrato/Chorus. Percussion On, Soft, Fast, Second.
Lower 08 8000 000.
Bass lower manual 80.
Leslie simulator Slow position.
Equalizer Bass +3dB, Mid 0dB, Treble 0dB.
Overdrive not used.
Reverb Hall, Soft, 50%.
Tonewheel mode Vintage 2 (high level of tonewheel crosstalk and cable leakage artefacts).

The sound is recorded line out from the organ. No additional external effects, external amplifiers or speakers are used.

  • how does it feel in comparison with Viscount db 5? Does it have more possibilities or less tonal options?

  • Hi Ingolf

Both the Nord C1/C2 and the Viscount/Oberheim DB5 are aiming for 100% B-3 tonal options, so my guess is that it's a draw between them regarding functions, in the 'B-3 department'.

Which one sound closest to the real deal, the B-3. I don't know, as I havn't tried the DB5 out.

The C1 have a Farfisa and a Vox also, to that the C2 also adds a sampled baroque to the organ mix.

Please, write me a line if you compare them in real life :-)

    Keep swinging,

  • That's some sweet stuff dude. I've been practicing lately trying to bring my skill level up. Any tips on developing R/L independence? I can pick up some good tips from watching your right hand anyway. Thanks for the vids, great stuff!

  • Thanks jasongogal!

I have sent you a loooong message about R/L independence and how to develop independent left hand walking bass lines. Check out your YouTube message inbox, please.

    But the bottom line is:

    **********

The left hand is The Boss in jazz organ

    **********

Never play more on top than the left hand will let you. Even if it means playing only one note with the right hand.

    Keep swinging,

  • Hi someguy

I'm not a Joey DeFrancesco pro, just a mere mortal, but I will try to answer further questions you might have (tips about players, 'revealing' records, how to get the left/right hand independence, etc).

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • @rounder2u Thanks for the info, I'm new to the jazz organ and have been researching and listening to a lot of it lately.

  • Hi someguy

    Thanks!

    Yes, that's the 'pop'!

The non-tonal keyboard 'thump' on the lower manual, played with the fingertips, the palm or the knuckles, added as a rhythmic device. I use them almost without thinking about them now, also when improvising. They have become ingrained.

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • at 1:18, is that the famous Hammond pop? Excellent playing btw.

  • Falcusaronius, you're absolutely right!

    Thanks for spotting my error.

(I'm doing a facepalm of the highest order right now)

The text should be "thumb at the fifth (G)"

    Keep swinging,

    Rounder

  • Wouldn't the sixth be an A?
