A clip from the controversial Australian film "Unlikely Travellers", which follows six people with intellectual disabilities on a remarkable trip to Egypt. Funny, moving and empowering.

  • There are clearly two sides to this issue and both are worthy of an informed, rational discussion. What disturbs me is that one side of this debate --- the one attacking my project -- consistently resorts to vitriolic personal attacks. They make heavy-handed demands for my footage, insult my character, and cast aspersions about the people and organisations involved in my work. They do all these things while claiming the moral high ground and seeking to the make the world a better place.

  • I was at the screening of Unlikely Travellers on Sunday afternoon! A sell-out! And what a response by everyone who attended.

  • "If the parent's support were enough, why bother with the ethical clearance?"

All PHD research requires ethical clearance before it can be undertaken.

  • Unlikely Travellers was the first part of the whole research project entitled "Laughing at/with the Disabled". Which is the topic that Michael is exploring for his PhD. The two lectures have publicly criticised sections of Unlikely Travellers. It's a pity you didn't attend the BIFF screening leunerj, not only could you see these sections of the film in context, you could have had a chat to the stars and got a better understanding of their enthusiasm and pride in themselves and in these projects.

  • Hello,

FYI - the film by Michael Noonan that Gary MacLennan and John Hookham were disturbed by was an entirely different project.

The project that they complained about was titled 'Laughing At The Disabled'.

  • Unlikely Travellers screens at BIFF to a sell out crowd. More than 200 people made the effort to see what all the fuss is about and judging by their reaction, left the theatre in full support of the project and the people involved. A quick search for the review on the Paradigm Oz website sums up the audience reaction well.

  • Yes,but after watching it again I can't see what it resolves. If the parent's support were enough, why bother with the ethical clearance? Now there's to be continuing ethical oversight on the project, but the supervisors say this won't 'censor' the work. What will it do if it has no influence? Is it just for show?Wissler says that M&H's suspension was fair because QUT had a procedure...which convicted them of misrepresentation without checking the footage they were suspended for 'misrepresenting'.

  • Tonight's ABC Statline episode is on YouTube. Check the link in my favourites. Interesting analysis of the situation.

  • maybe some people didnt know about the screening last year!

  • Unfortunately the smear campaign against Michael Noonan has preyed upon people's naivety.

Anyone who went to the screening of Unlikely Travellers last year can confirm how absurd the accusations are.
