I've installed the latest drivers from ATI on my Ubuntu 8.10 and found that they (the drivers) are full of bugs. The 9.2 version worked well.
So, opening a video with Totem leads to improper aspect ratio, very sluggish playing and, eventually, if I try to activate fullscreen mode, my system crashes.
Mplayer works fine. Thanks.

Did you try MPlayer with the compiz patch and the compiz video playback plugin? You can also try using VLC with X11 video output. I am using the latest 9.4 catalyst in Arch, almost everything works great, with the exception of Full Screen playback being a tad choppy but I haven't really looked into why yet.
