I've installed the latest drivers from ATI on my Ubuntu 8.10 and found that they (the drivers) are full of bugs. The 9.2 version worked well.
So, opening a video with Totem leads to improper aspect ratio, very sluggish playing and, eventually, if I try to activate fullscreen mode, my system crashes.

  • Mplayer works fine. Thanks.

  • Did you try MPlayer with the compiz patch and the compiz video playback plugin? You can also try using VLC with X11 video output. I am using the latest 9.4 catalyst in Arch, almost everything works great, with the exception of Full Screen playback being a tad choppy but I haven't really looked into why yet.
