I think most injuries come from swimmers who are catching the wave incorrectly. They need to stop heading straight to shore, but angle oneself along the wave's face to the right or left. When I was at Waimea, I heard a black kid pop up right next to me, "oww, that one hurt my neck." No shit. Don't go straight!
