If you remember this film well, you'd know that he was affected by Gus Gorman's 'unknown element' he had computerized and placed into the synthetic kryptonite--equivalent to the comics' 'red kryptonite,' which cannot kill Superman, but affects him according to his immediate environment.

They actually did this kind of scene in Superman 3 there's a bridge that is on the verge of collapse but Superman is too pre-occupied hanging around Lana Lang's house, acting like the normal goody-two-shoe Superman but he's really there to make it with her, all this time the bridge is deteriorating rapidly finally collapsing into the river with many causalties, deaths. When Superman shows up, a cop chastises him saying, Thanks for nothing.
