(poverty)
Went down to the corner-see my buddy Bill
Lived through all the wars and the jobs leaving here.
We play checkers, down the old folks home
I asked how he has a smile-this is what he said
(chorus)
If you have a firm mattress
And a good pair of shoes
Three squares a day...there's nothing you can't live through.
Seen old Annie, at the church Bazar.
She's got to be 80 years old...and moving all the time. She buried her husband, buried her kids; but always has a kind word and I aked her why this is....
(chorus)
Ran into Mary, at the corner store.
40 hours for minimum wage and then she goes home. Home is a shelter, 2 blocks down the street. Its where she's raising her kids-she can't pay the rent. I said " Mary...your looking down? What do you need to help you along?"
(chorus)
If you want to have wars
If you want to take jobs away
If you won't give healthcare
If you won't give a descent wage.
If minimum wage can't pay the rent-then why do we call it minimum?
The least what we should do, to/for those people struggling through is ....
(chorus)

Colloquial poetry blended with acoustic rock and a dash of sermonising works pretty well. I feel like I'm in some global cafe drop in listening to you here.
