A/C on range and ambient temperature are related but not as much as you'd think. If the temp setting is low enough to kick on the compressor and as long as the compressor is drawing electricity then the amount of time the A/C can run will be less. The auto designers are missing it. They are using the average mileage number as 40 miles per day commute. Well they really need to do it as average time AND distance WITH the A/C running on FULL. A lot of people sit in traffic in the heat.

Yeah, that's all the pent up range anxiety being disappated by the Volt's range extender ... or maybe it thought you were trying to unpluig it and it was just growling at ya!

Did you check with the dealer? Maybe its normal. I would like to know where you live and how the A/C works in the summer. I can't find jack squat about range with the A/C on. I live in Florida and you need to run the A/C all of the time unless you're heading to the beach. Otherwise you'll be a hot mess when you get to where you're going. So please give so usage numbers I'd be forever grateful.

@cat5fan We are taking it to the dealership in a week. I'll post whatever happens. Like any car, running the AC will reduce your range. I haven't done a definitive test with the Volt, but in the MINI E, it only reduced the range by a few miles. The Volt has 3 modes: "Fan Only" (No AC or heat) "Eco" (minimal AC and heat) and "Comfort" (full AC and heat). The amount range is reduced would depend on ambient temperature as well as the climate mode.
