Muslims rally in New York against NYPD 'repression'

coalition of over 50 religious, social justice and community organizations rallied and held Friday prayers in New York's Lower Manhattan.

They were protesting against the religious and ethnic profiling of Muslim communities by the New York City Police Department (NYPD), the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and other law enforcement agencies.
Muslim protesters called for an immediate end to all racial, ethnic and religious profiling and dismantlement and disclosure of all surveillance operations.

They demanded protection of their right to freedom of worship, free speech, and free association.

Speakers included elected officials, community and religious leaders, City University of New York students, affected New Yorkers, and musical and poetic performers.

Recent reports indicated that the NYPD spied on Muslim leaders who figured prominently in community outreach efforts, and infiltrated Muslim student groups not suspected of committing any crime.
