Bill Dickens stopped by to see the B2M at the Winter NAMM 2010 show, and had some fun with it. The sonuus B2M is a simple-to-use, highly effective, bass-to-MIDI converter. It is "Universal" because it doesn't need a special pick-up mounted on your bass, but instead simply connects to your bass like any other effects pedal or tuner.

  • This is a very nice (and very cheap) way to get into the otherwise daunting world of midi-bass. Can you tell me the inherent tracking latency of an open E string (lowest) on a 4 string bass in standard tuning? I saw you had mentioned low B latency in another video, hence the question. Can you also tell me the setup in this video (other hardware such as synth or interface). Thanks

  • @ihasmario Low-E latency is around 32ms, which is about as fast as you can get for pitch-to-MIDI. On the video we are using a Yamaha Motif rack connected directly to the B2M. The Motif has some very nice sounds, you can hear it being switched to some other sounds during the video.

FYI: Our new i2M musicport can have a faster "feel" on MIDI tracking for 4-string bass (it has a special 4-string mode as well as the 5-string mode that the B2M has).

  • @sonuusMusic Will either system be able to produce a portamento on a fretless bass or would it be better to use midi glide?

  • @ihasmario To get portamento on a fretless bass, simply configure the synth to use portamento and it will automatically slide between notes when you play them. Also, pitch-bend tracking on the B2M and i2M musicport will ensure the synth responds exactly to your slides on a fretless. To get long, smooth slides you need to use the i2M musicport which can be configured for very long slides (up to 3 octaves) using pitch-bend MIDI messages.

  • Do I understand it right, it's monophonic, doesn't work with chords?

  • @heartmood Yes, that's correct.

  • It would be really interesting to hear someone play the upright bass sounds. From Trilogy bass VSTi for example.

  • @sji311 check the sonuus website, I think they do a version that tracks guitar and bass

  • Saxophones can eat a dick. Use something Jordan Rudess would use!

  • @bemolable

As mentioned above, in the US, the list price is 129 US dollars.

It's now available in some stores around $99.
