If I had seen this interview when it was broadcast, I'd have thought Jim was a complete dick!
Thankfully I was already a fan and (anyway) I missed this episode of The Tube.

That's Muriel Gray doing the interview. She ain't being negative she would have probably been the one who invited him onto the show, she was very well informed. If you step back you will see that the two of them know what a staged set-up this interview is, so they are both playing along with a kind of charade. The tube was a lot like that, kind of arch ironic sarkiness where it was putting on bands enjoyed by an older audience, but in the schoolkids hour. It went out at 5.30 in the evening.
