After 20 months of restructuring Northwest Airlines has come out of bankruptcy and began to trade on the NYSE in late May 2007. Northwest's CEO Doug Steenland exited the bankruptcy with a big pay package. On top of Steenland's salary, reported at $516,384 dollars last year, he will get a total compensation package of more than $26.6 million in stock. That's $5.8 million in stock options and $20.8 million worth of restricted stocks that will vest over the next four years. Northwest workers bore the brunt of the restructuring — after a $1.4 billion a year cut in labor expenses — pilots and flight attendant wages were cut by between 20 and 40 percent. (From Bill Moyers' show on 6.8.07...unfortunately only caught the tail end of it... but NWA has basically stolen from its loyal employees and given MILLIONS in compensation to their Execs after getting out of Bankruptcy. The more honest airline seems to be Delta in this documentary at least).

  • Great points! I'm a transplant to this country & there is w/out a doubt a lot I love about it, but I also have many observations on consumerism, how sensationalized the celebrity stories are, and how, almost as if planted, they take up the space of real & important news that affect people not just here but all over the world.

  • How do those ceo's sleep at night? Bravo to Delta's.

  • SO INCREDIBLY TRUE! I cannot imagine how these people find peacefulness in their lives... does money buy it?

And does it truly last, right? Delta's CEO is definitely an example that others should follow. (I just don't understand why people don't really unite to boycott NW and show them the power of the people! I wish they would!).

  • Americans are so overwhelmed,so underinformed of balanced real news,so distracted by the likes of Paris Hilton(gah)that as a country,we just "wait and see" too much.

I lived thru the 60's,and while a lot of criticism can legitimately be leveled at the era,we at least had "real journalism". When reality is relentlessly shoved in your face, you are forced to deal with it without Linday's latest rehab crisis as the lead story.

  • cont'd:

People are, as you say, blinded by the amount of crap -- I believe me, I know a lot of us use the "crap" to numb the pain -- but a lot of people use it to stay uniformed and pretend we live in a perfect world when we certainly don't. I don't know what it'll take, but a look around right now reveals nothing but destruction/desperation/a sense of doom... thank you George Bush & Gang!

    Awful.

  • I glad I don't use airlines anymore since 2005!

  • Second that!

  • Some do it better than others, and that's the issue here is not?

  • Has public disclosure on executive pay really done anything to solve the problem if there is one? How much is too much?

  • Doug Parker was not even involved in the orginal US Airways bankruptcies, he was too busy making something out of America West and saving workers after the 9/11 attacks. He got concessions from vendors instead rather than plunging the company into another bankruptcy. To include him as an example is just stupid. To his credit he has been very upfront about his pay, more than he has to be in my opinion. Everyone is entitled to decent pay, but don't think we are going to be equal.

  • Look---the guys at the top are worthy of every penny. They are the ones who keep their hands on the tiller during the big storm. They are the ones who have to make the hard decisions about laying people off and slashing pay. And, in our system, ANYBODY can work up to CEO.

  • I am so glad I have always hated public transportation; there are a few perks to being a non-conforming recluse. (grin)

I never stand in line for anything, I don't shop on command, and I don't have to worry about being abused and treated like cattle by the Matrix. Bush and his henchmen have destroyed America's good name anyway, and has made a target out of every American that travels; real glad I only travel by car or horse. (smile)

  • Guess I'm wrong. Steenland will be a board member. Maybe not as a Delta executive but will be on the board. He will probably get up to 19 million USD in compensation but thats when the merger is approved.

  • If Northwest and Delta merge then Steenland will leave. He will get up to 19 Million USD in compensation.
