The image has absolutly nothing to do with the hymn, anyway thank you for posting it... I wonder what the author would have said... maybe it is too fast but it is the proof the rythm WORKS! it still works after more than 1200 years...

@zagastaroth Not an unnatural form but the local Vulgar Latin in contrast to Classic Latin. Dont forget, its a quite similar process to the development of the Romance Languages (Italian, French, Spanish, Rumanian...).

Not regular latin though - it's a sort of exotic latin due to the origin of the text from Ireland. Back then, ireland was not only relatively isolated but christianity was fundamentally different in organisation there than on the continent. For example: on the continent regular clergy like bishops and priests were in power, while in ireland they were often subordinate to the monasteries. Such things invited the use of a scholarly but unnatural form of latin , showing in the choice or words.
