Breaking into a Garage is easy. Stopping this method of crime is easy too. Here's the solution:

Remove the emergency cord from the lever on the middle track of the garage door opener. Cut a thick clothes hanger to a 3"-4" length and put the wire through the lever hole and the hole just above it.

If you need to open the door manually, remove the wire and move the lever with your finger.

  • That's great/innovative, but to be perfectly honest, if your garage door is installed properly, then there won't be any room for anyone to stick anything up through the top.

  • @mikeo2222 - thanks Mike - You are right. My door has windows. I can't figure out why they ever made garage doors with windows - they are useless and let in a lot of sun and cold air

  • Leave the door open and get a pit bull

  • I just bought THE GARAGE SHIELD.It was really simple to install and really inexpensive. And my Emergency Release lever is still functional. If it is not functional when there is a fire then the firemen will cut it into pieces to get into your garage. And you may be liable if any of them get injured because of this malfunction!!

  • Electric Tape.

  • @mikeo2222 Actually, that's not true at all. I have an aluminum door with no windows, so the crooks just bent in the top of my door with a crowbar.

  • Use the plastic tie wrap, as shown in the video, and make it so no one can see into the windows. It might not be 100% secure, but the more difficult and time-consumming you make it the less likely the burglar will want to hang around and keep trying. Make sure you also have motion-activated lights outside your garage, to disuade nighttime burglary.

And keep your garage doro closed even if you are at home so you won't have any spontaneous uninvited guests 'dropping in'.

  • Just better hope you don't ever need to disengage the opener in an emergency.

  • "That's very nice"

  • @bigbwd thanks for the info.

  • @bry806 If it's installed correctly then 1-2 inches of flex is unacceptable. With proper track and operator adjustment there should be NO flex. No matter what part of the country your in.
