Muting jerks & objects
If someone is being a jerk and annoying you, you can mute them! If you Right-click an avatar and Mute from pie menu, it will mute their text chat and their "Teleport" offers. Muting can also block particles and inventory gives. Muted Residents and objects are stored in a Mute list that you can see in Communicate window -- Local Chat History (Click to expand), and you can select names and "Show muted text" if you really want to. Another way to mute is to View menu -- Mute List. You can Click either "Mute Resident' or "Mute object by name" (find an object's name with a Right-click on that object, and be sure to type in the exact name). You can also mute an object Right-click an object -- More -- More -- Mute.

  • Muting is handy for rude or abusive avs. It's also very handy for people who don't realize that constant use of bad sound clips or gestures that take up many chat lines are often annoying. A must see video for anyone new to SL!

  • Fair warning:

In case it didn't change again recently, muting an object like a notecard giver, that gives content whenever you show up in a shop for example, doesn't mute just the object but the owner as a whole so careful with that!

I've muted such a greeter object and later ..my purchase didn't arrive because it had muted the shop owner too.

I'd welcome it if a muted object and a muted resident would be separate again so that it's useful in such situation to just shut up one item of someone.

  • i hate 2.6.9 HATE it.. cause it doesn't allow profile muting or blocking and no key to bring up the mute list at least no one knows it.. I really wish they'd give us a bloody keymap.

  • Using the new SL Viewer, how can I mute the sounds of an object, if it's so small that I can't select it?

  • lol Torley doesnt have to worry about muting people because they would suck his D*** if they saw him 8D

  • great torley, ... but is it true, if i mute someone, his or her avatar is grayed out then too... well can be my viewer too, i am using greenlife's viewer... thanks for making new tutorials :)

  • thanks for this!

  • Now I wonder if that only happens when using the Mute-button of the transfer dialog or if it mutes the owner as well when I add the object manually to the list through the "Mute object by name..." option.

I had used the mute button on the dialog popup I think when it gave me the notecard yet another time. Maybe manual object mute is a work-around. I'd have to try that.

Anyhow be careful about what and who you mute so that you don't end up causing shopping trouble for yourself and the vendor.
