@chriswhitehead Glad to know you were also there. I was also happy to see Lloyd back and recovered. There was another guy with me you might know of: Joe Ryan, a good steel guitarist.
Please check out on youtube under "twangmister". Joe Ryan also looks after the website w3_steelguitarireland. I don't really know what Lloyd is playing at the beginning but it sounds like a typical country intro. I follow Lloyd Green's news is to visit w3_lloydgreentribute now and then.
@danielibnz I was also at that festival and also bought that CD ;) He was so polished and made it all look so easy. I remember feeling so grateful to Gerry for getting him over to play for us all as well as thankful that Lloyd was feeling better and back to playing steel again.
Do you know what he is playing at the beginning of this vid? and also if he has any other new cds available?
A few years ago, i had the distinct pleasure to speak with Lloyd on the phone for a time, and to listen to his reasoning, and his style and knowing of his history was sure a high point of my life. A true hero of mine. Asking him his all time fav artists he ever played for, he said without hesitation Mel Street was #1. He loved his sessions with Paycheck and Aubrey Mayhew in the early 60s. Loved Charlie Pride, and Lynn Anderson. Lloyd is truly one of the last of the steel legends with us!!
Lloyd's talking about that producer reminded me of a story Peggy Emmons told me about Buddy going to do a session and the producer asked him "can you play it like Pete Drake?" Buddy said to him, "if you want it played like Pete Drake, hire Pete Drake"' and got up, packed up his guitar and left the studio. This is a great post.....thank you for it!
My guess is that 21 year old "producer" has seen this video..and someone else already clued him into who Mr. Green is....I bet he is feeling rather sheepish about now...
When you hear Lloyd playing pedal steel you never have to ask "who is that playing"? Lloyd was, and still is the easiest steel player to recognize, he has a unique style and sound. From the mid 60s to mid 70s Lloyd and Pete Drake all but cleaned up in Nashville when it came to recording sessions doing sometimes five a day each .
I met Lloyd Green on the Steel Guitar Festival 92, organized by Gerry Hogan, in Newbury, United Kingdom.
I had the opportunity to listen to his music and watching his playing live, which was very interesting. Then I bought his recording Reflections, he signed it for me, and he was very kind posing for some pictures with his wife and another with me.
I was impressed with the easy approach by his sincere attitude.
Lloyd Green is my hero!
