SD60I 5600 leads eastbound general merchandise through Horseshoe Curve on August 8, 1996. I've caught no end of ribbing since then for my reaction as the 5600 passed in front of the camera, but I'm taking it in stride :)

After missing a few surprises on the '94 trip due to shutting off the camera, I resolved this trip to let the camera roll through the full length of each train I saw, and it certainly paid off here with the parade of fallen-flag cars - watch for an Erie-Lackawanna boxcar still wearing its original number!

  • If you think one EL is cool. Too bad you didn't see the trains when the whole train was just as interesting. Now, there's just two super systems in the east. And most of the equipment doesn't belong to a railroad at all! The best way to see HSC is from Amtrak. I would think you'd like Sand Patch better being a Chesamore and Ohio guy. (FFV) Or is that Baltapeake and Ohio?

  • I saw enough of them as a kid to know what it was like, I just never filmed them or took pictures at that age. Lots of fond memories though. One of these days, I'll get around to Sand Patch; I come within miles of it on my route up to Altoona.

  • HAHA that horn scared ya good! The horns on the csx SD70's have scared me before the same way! Nice to see some conrail footage from before the merger, I used to watch trains in Leetonia Ohio which is this same line I believe? That was back around the same time you shot this that was always a super busy line!

  • May I sugguest a ride in the summer (max daylight) on the "Capitol Limited" that way you can see the B&O's Horse Shoe curve at Ohio Pyle, PA. Now that Amtrak has been driven out of the Express market. Many times you can look out the rear car and see 180 degrees, kind of like a dome.

  • hey sweet!! i saw Ex 5600 saturday:)

  • Love HSC. One of my all time fav spots to see trains.

  • thats a long train

  • Cool horns!

  • Lol, well at least I know I'm not the only one who jumps when a train blows its horn... Nice vid anyway :)
