Basic Engine Building DVD - Chapter 51: Engine Externals

A quick clip on installing external components like your fuel pump, water pump, and thermostat housing. It's usually easiest to have the harmonic balancer set at top dead center for your fuel pump.

BoxWrench.net is a community and resource designed for automotive enthusiasts. The Basic Engine Building DVD is over three hours of engine building that covers everything from removal and disassembly to final assembly and engine start-up. This is the ultimate DVD for any home mechanic or engine enthusiast that wants to see a complete rebuild from Teardown to Start-Up. This video can be used to learn how to work on almost any type of internal combustion engine including V8, V6, Straight 8, in-line 6 and even 4 cylinder engines. All of the interactive features and menus will not work over YouTube.

This video is great for people interested in car repair, car care, and restoration. As well as hot rods, muscle cars, performance parts, and boosting horsepower. It can also help you to gain knowledge for increasing fuel economy, how to lower your emissions, and covers preventative maintenance to avoid little things like overheating.

  • Ooooh.... My brother and I are going to work on rebuilding my 360. I could probably use these DVDs. =D I don't know much about cars so I look to my bro.

  • This video shows some of the really easy stuff.

The rest of our complete DVDs show all of the more complicated engine building...although, the reason we made them was to make it easy for anyone to build an engine.

  • You forgot to explain about the bolt you showed in the front of the block you took out and put in the right side of the pump. That bolt goes in and locks the rod in the up position so that it does not slip down when the pump is installed. You need to put in a short bolt in that hole after the pump is in.

  • This is only one of a couple sample clips. The complete DVD shows all the other details.

However, that one bolt hole of the front of an SB Chevy block doesn't pass all the way into the fuel pump pushrod bore for all of the chevy blocks. Many of the later model blocks after 1986 have blind holes there and you have to hold the fuel pump rod in place with thick grease or assembly lubricant.

  • Why does 0:12 remind me of something? LoL

  • what kind of gaskit sealer is that thanks

  • god slow down, you are rebuilding an engine and there are hundredths of steps, don't keep skipping them, how did the heads go back on, I'm watching all the videos and didn't see that one

  • what is that gasket sealer used in the video? it has a neat application brush. I wonder is that similar to any high temp blue/red/gray silicone RTV stuff you can buy in tubes for cheap money at the auto store? is it limited to paper gaskets or does it work well with any - steel, rubber, klingerite? could that help a leaky vave cover that uses a silicone type rubber gasket inserted into a groove? can mate it up with some RTV where it leaks? thanks a ton!

  • @RexB ,Now that i think back on it , it wasnt all that bad, even working in a metal shop building in the dead of winter and having to push the engine stand close to the pot bellied wood stove to stay warm while working. But i'am sure at the time i was somewhat displeased with the working conditions, hahaha

Take care and have a nice day,Rob

  • @Hollrobb Dang, I bet that sucked.... But thanks Rob!

  • @RexB ,Lucky for you guys ,you have the internet to look too for info, my first engine rebuild was before the internet and all my info came from an old greasy chiltons manual. I'am not a expert but my advice is to take your time and make sure you got all your parts good and clean and organized.

    Good luck and have fun,Rob

  • Me and my son are working on installing a 4 barrel intake and carb on my 1978 Camaro Z28, when I bought it, it had a 2 barrel setup, and the carb was in horrible shape,, Two screws missing on the rear of the carb,,, Not a good way to run a motor. Tomorrow we are going to be installing the intake and carb, hopefully get to start my engine,, I can hardly wait,, This video is awesome,, I am an old school mechanic, and know what to do, ,but still watching is fun.
