The Florida International University leadership is looking to cut the entire recreation and sport management program, but no consideration has been given to those who will be the most affected by this decision--people with disabilities, illnesses, youth at risk or who have been injured.
Hows it going, still offering?

The FIU Therapeutic Recreation Program is an excellent, well know program. Graduates become Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists, a CTRS, ( I've been certified for 28 years) and work with individuals with disabilities. They help them to have improved quality of life, and to make sure that the ADA is followed. They work in nursing homes, schools, hospitals, communities. They advocate for individuals with disabilities, our friends and families. Please don't cut this outstanding program.

It is a shame that those of us who are fortunate enough to not have a disability, do not usually consider those in our everyday decision making. Those of us who decided to pursue this program, chose to care for those who are often left behind. It is imperative that this program be allowed to blossom so that we can take care these people who need us in their communities. Shame on you faculty for your insensitivity. Where is your committment to community?

I know from what I have seen in this video as well as from a VERY dear friend in this program how valuable rec therapy is. Everyone deserves a chance to be active and enjoy the great outdoors, in addition to getting the opportunity to be a member of a team. Please don't cut the program!

Eliminating the recrational therapy program at FIU would be the greatest mistake. I'm a graduate of FIU who left the occupational therapy trak for the recreational therapy program.
If FIU thinks they'll be saving money, they would in fact be losing. Not only that, the most important thing is that there is a large amount of people needing and benefitting from recreational therapy. It is critical that FIU keeps the recreational therapy program.

I love that this video showcases the various ways in which Recreational Therapists serve their communities!

It is sad that some individuals of our community are not able to walk on the street, watch a movie, or listen a song. In like manner, some of us, who have the vocation to help in the recovery of those populations, will not have a place to acquire the knowledge necessary to improve the lifestyle of that people. As a mother of the child who appears on the video, and former recreational therapy student, I believe that the directives of FIU should re-evaluate the closing of this wonderful career.

Its a shame that FIU chooses to eliminate a program that creates professionals who have a direct, positive and lasting impact in people's lives.
FIU should re-evaluate their priorities. Isiah Thomas is the new basketball coach ($1.29 million salary) A former NBA star who was a central figure in the recent sexual harassment lawsuit vs the NY Knicks. The victim was awarded $11.6 million but the jury said Thomas never did anything wrong. So, what exactly was the $11 million for?

One of the biggest tragedies of harsh economic times likes these is that those hit hardest are our most vulnerable citizens. By eliminating a program such as this due to the economic crisis, FIU will make the pain from the crisis last much longer than the crisis itself. I am not affiliated with FIU or this program, but I do work with people with disabilities, and I understand how critical programs like this are to their well-being.

Good luck on saving the programs. I graduated with my Sports Management degree from FIU Sprint 08.
