Some news clips and interviews with Rick Dyer demonstrating the Halcyon System during the production and testing phase. Tv news reports on the production of the system during 1983 and 1984.

The Halcyon was groundbreaking for the time (late 1984), featuring voice recognition, speech synthesis and a laserdisc player. The brainchild of Rick Dyer, best known for Dragon's Lair and Space Ace arcade laser games, it was also very expensive. Only a few were sold, with just two games ever released (Thayer's Quest and NFL Football) before the company went bankrupt.

  • deos this play cobracommand with a joystick i sure like to get one

  • Good question, there was a keyboard but I don't recall seeing a joystick in any of the pictures I've seen. Maybe Cobra Command was there just to show off the laserdisc capabilities? Anyhow, you can play CC with a joystick on a modern PC with Daphne emulator.

  • Given today's technologies, I think he should come back. It seems like he could really do something amazing.

  • This guy could've been the Steve Jobs of videogames had the Great Crash of 1984 hadn't happened. From other videos and interviews I've seen of him,the guy was a genius.

  • Their over-confidence is pretty similar to John Romero before he released Daikatana.

  • This is pretty funny.

I ipad would actually be of some use and not just a giant itouch. Real estate is a waste of his talent. He could make serious money now, people pay ridiculous amounts of money on tech stuff. Who knows, something like the halcyon could probably be the newest must have gadget. Lol this is like finding out Shigeru Miyamoto gave up games to run a mcdonalda chain or if Edison had stopped inventing and became a banker. Oh well, what can you do...

  • @collegedude1986

Aw, really? I was hoping he'd be at least a consultant with some video game company. He had so many great Ideas that were ahead of his time and I think that with todays technology he could really put his ideas to work. I mean, could you imagine what new innovations he could do with games now if he worked with Square, Sony or something like that? Or maybe even Apple, that company is all about taking risk and coming out with new, unique products. With him on their side, maybe

  • Anyone know what happened to him?

  • why did this not catch on!

  • 3:24 - that's a dream come true right there!!! i would love a rdi halcyon

  • It's sad to look back at all of this and see how strong a man's hopes and dreams were, and then seeing that he gambled everything on it... and...

    it FUCKING failed, lol.

Where is Rick Dyer now? Probably lying in some back alley with a crack pipe hanging out of his mouth and a heroin needle in sticking into his arm, constantly babbling "Halcyon... Halcyon... HAL-CY-OOOOOOON!!!"
