Göteborgs Opera production of Cats (Sweden).

Start date: 9th September 2006
End date: 24th February 2007

The show took place in the amusement park instead of junkyard. So e.g. Skimbleshanks was a cat from the roller-coaster train etc.

The choreography was also very different. This ball sometimes reminds acrobatic rock'n'roll rather than dancing that everybody knows from the original productions.

The most significant factor of this production was the music that was performed by the opera orchestra. It was completely new and fantastic experience after all those small-sized orchestras of many productions. Sometimes I catch myself rather listening to this ball than watching it.

I'm sorry for the picture "quality" and for the 3:02-3:06 lag due to technical limitations. It is impossible to recognize each character, but at least two of them are really significant - those black and white cats who do the most crazy acrobatics. They are Tantomile and Coricopat and they were circus performers (it explains everything :-)).

I don't own any copyright for this video, I just wanted to give an idea of very original and different approach to this musical.

  • Interesting to see how much that was simular to the stockholm version. I thaught that the tivolly setting was invented for stockholm but I guess it works in gbg to. As I can recall it the dance was better in stockholm thou. Was the wall in gbg to?

  • You've seen the Stockholm version? What was the music like? Did they have large orchestra too?

  • Anymore clips from this production? Like the Old Gumbie Cat?

  • Sorry, only this short piece.

Strange - I don't seem to remember how did the Gumbie part look like :-/

  • Ahhh we need more Goteborg vids.

  • Oh WOW! Very different but awesome!

I don't know if anyone shares my opinion but the instrumental and music, especially at the beginning, sounds much more ... 'cat-like', much more playfully than in the original productions and so does the choreo; it's like I imagine cats' music to 'dance' to if you know what I mean XD

  • I like the acrobatic style of this dance.

  • I'm now an official fan of this production. No more comments required.

  • this is so kick-ass!! Love the music AND dancing!

  • A late answer to you Derhorn, the ppl in the musical was nearly all the same, and so were the dances (as far as I've seen from the Gbg) altho im not 100% sure!

About the orchestra,it was about 10 ppl I think,if thats large or not,I dont know

  • I heard the Swedes had a different version( Choreography that is). Honestly, I don't like it. There is only ONE Jellicle Ball, the original as choreographed by Gillian Lynne. If the rest of the world from London and B'way to Melbourne and Tokyo keep to the original script .. so should the Swedes

  • I LOVE the soundtrack to this version! They should have a c.d., and if they already do, then were is it?

  • BEST PERFORMANCE EVER!!!!!!

  • Amazing!! It's interesting to see a different version.... I played Exotica october 09 in PR...... I'm loving this! Thank you for uploading this video!
