Here is a song that originated from the jingle for a "patent medicine", HADACOL. Very popular in the dry counties of the south because the "dietary supplement" contained 12% alcohol as a "preservative". Apparently, there were places you could go, "health bars" I guess you could call them, where this tonic was offered in shot glasses. There is a pretty interesting article about this in WIKIPEDIA. Check it out. Enjoy!

  • wow i always thought this was a professor longhair song - which came first ????

  • this record is on display in the Cabildo Museum in NOLA....unsung heroes, History of Louisiana Rock and Roll.

  • in his days as a DJ on WDIA in Memphis B. B. King did commercials for a concoction similar to Hadacol called Peptikon........which i believe was 25% alcohol

  • what about the one that started it all...the original Hadacol Boogie....also by Bill Nettles

  • I wrote a considerable amount of that Wikipedia article on Hadacol. It went from a patent medicine to a full-blown social movement, and collapsed in a Cajun version of the Enron scandal. Still, it was the last (and arguably largest) of the "medicine shows". You could go to pharmacies in Dry counties in the South and order a shot of Hadacol over the counter. Potent stuff (12% alcohol = 24 proof).
