What's Done in the Dark: The Millie L. McGhee Story

Millie McGhee was born in McComb, Mississippi in 1947, to African-American parents of humble circumstance. Millie was a happy, playful child, full of life, vigor, and energy -- that is until she was forced to keep a secret, a family secret, and the secret was so frightening to her that it changed her childhood forever. This secret could have tumbled the regime of one of the most powerful men in American history: J. Edgar Hoover.

After 10 years of genealogical research and many more years of counseling, Millie finally learned to forgive Mr. Hoover, her ancestor, for his notorious and racist policies as head of the FBI.

Millie's is a story of forgiveness and of hope. It sheds new light on the fact that keeping secrets does more harm than good, and reminds us that we are each a vital part of the same human family. As Millie's father used to tell her: "What's done in the dark shall come to the light..."
