"The Joyless Street (German: Die freudlose Gasse, 1925) is a film directed by Georg Wilhelm Pabst in Germany, based on the novel by Hugo Bettauer, and is one of the first films of the "New Objectivity movement. It stars Greta Garbo in her second starring role. The film is often described as a morality story in which the 'fallen woman' suffers for her sins, while the more virtuous woman gets the happy end." • In fact a very good film. The music itself is good as well. But ! This music together with this film is simply horrible and does not fit at all. I never understand why so many European silent movies were "ruined" in the U.S. by a musical background that does not go with these films and their stories.

  • I've always thought Garbo is the one great actress for whom it was fitting not to win the academy award - she transcended her peers in such a way that to put her performances in competition with others is almost insulting. Oddly enough, I think Hepburn is the greatest American actress, and my personal favorite, but I don't have the same feeling about her.

  • @Chutson353 You mean of course Audrie and not her whore commie sister...

  • I saw all of Garbo's silent movies back in the early 70's, and all had great orchestral scores set to them. Today I can't find any of them with those scores, which is a huge loss.

  • omg thank you so much for posting this video.
