Directed by Emil Chiaberi and produced by Oscar and Emmy winner James Moll, this feature-length documentary examines the growing phenomenon of spree killings in the United States.
The film explores the basic question of what brings a seemingly normal person to the point of committing mass murder. It examines the complex interplay of personal and societal factors leading up to incidents of workplace massacres, starting with the earliest post office massacre in 1986.
What drives people to kill this way, what pushes them over the edge? Why all the bloodshed, and why now? And what is it about US Postal Service that made it a poster boy for workplace massacres? America has witnessed widespread changes over the last 50-years, along with a profound transformation of the relationship between the individual and society. Could this shift have resulted in unseen forces, both within the workplace and outside of it, that are propelling this epidemic of mass murder?
The film shows how transformation of the US Postal Service from a government agency into a corporation a created stressful workplace environment filled with increasingly anxious and unhappy employees and, eventually, resulted in unprecedented bloodshed. But this transformation hasnt occurred in a vacuum. It also represents the world outside the post office corporate America itself. Whether inside a cubicle, behind a counter or on the factory floor the modern-day workplace has become a nerve-racking place. As Murder by Proxy: How America Went Postal explores the startling history of the going postal phenomenon, the film also follows the story of two extraordinary men brought together by their selfless dedication to defending the rights of ordinary American workers. Ultimately, it provides a thorough and provocative examination into the increasing number of mass murders in the United States, examining how and why they continue to occur, and what this phenomenon might lead to in the future.

  • I understand that the producer has been contacted by USPS headquarters asking for a private screening of the movie before it is released to the public. I hope they are worried and I hope the movie exposes the kind of culture they have fostered within the Post Office. Something has got to change here. Its been almost 19 years since the tragedy in Royal Oak and nothing has been done to hold anyone accountable and that is still a problem.

  • A deadly combination of economic rationalism, increasing competition, 'downsizing' and the current fashion for tough, dynamic, macho management styles have created a culture in which bullying can thrive, producing 'toxic' workplaces . Such workplaces perpetrate

dysfunction, fear, shame, and embarrassment, intimidating those who dare speak out and nurturing a silent epidemic.

  • Lies and betrayal from the top leaders set the example.

  • this doesn't just go on at the post office. Psychological terror has become the norm in the Workplace.

  • @patty00ify You are a coward for making comments like this. Anyone that works in the Royal Oak Post Office now and was also there in 1991 know the enormous amount of good Charlie has done for that place. You obviously have not seen the movie and are only making comments behind the veil of this medium. Anyone working in the Royal Oak district during that time will tell you that the management gang of thugs pushed people to the edge. You certainly kept your head in the sand back then.

  • Anyone know where you can download or watch this online?

  • Charlie Withers is an idiot !

  • (Continued) to go back and kill people is NOT NORMAL. I don't care how terrible they were to him. To go back and KILL people you have to be mentally ill. People are so desensitized to seeing murder that they excuse Tom's behavior.

  • I want to comment on the massacre at the Royal Oak post office in Michigan in 1991. I was working there at that time. Tom Mcllvane was mentally unstable. He even received a dishonorable discharge from the army for driving over someones car with a tank. This long hair at the post office (who is still there) keeps defending Tom and acting like it was not his fault. It was the fault of the diffiicult managment at that time. Even if they punched Tom in the face when they fired him, to (continued)

  • i got ripped off by the us postal office today and i did not like it all one bit

  • Is this film still playing at the Royal Oak Area? I would like to see it. thanks for any info.

  • Saw the film Thursday night in Royal Oak. It was very powerful. Workplace violence has become so commonplace that the American public has become immune to it. Hopefully this film will refocus attention on the dispicable management tactics used in the Postal Service. They haven't changed one bit in the 19 years since the Royal Oak tragedy. Thanks Emil and thanks Charlie Withers.
