Jab Deep Jale Aana Played on Flute By Dr. Kamath (CHITCHOR) Raga Yaman Kalyan

I have played on my Flute this beautiful melodious song from 1976 Film : CHITCHOR. Song was composed by Maestro Ravindra Jain and was originally sung brilliantly by Yesudas and Hemlata. This song is based on Raga Yaman Kalyan. I call it Yaman Kalyan instead of Raga Yaman, because in AVOROHA it is using SHUDH MA instead of TIVRA MA. Raga Yaman is exactly opposite to Raga Bhairavi where Bhairavi has all Komal Notes or Swaras and Raga Yaman has all SHUDH Notes or Swaras (Except Tivra MA of course).For further clarity for the readers, note that YAMAN, 'MA' is TIVRA in both aroha and avaroha. In Yaman Kalyan, 'ma' is TIVRA in aroha only and not in avaroha.

Most of the Hindi Songs based on Raga Yaman use SHUDH MA in AVAROHA so as make it Yaman Kayan like this CHIT CHOR Song. Some of other outstanding Hindi songs based on Raga Yaman Kalyan are "Ehsaan Tera Hoga Mujh Par" from Film Junglee of 1961. "Zindagi Bhar Nahin Bhulegi" from Film Barsaat Ki Raat of 1960. "Man Re Tu Kahe Na Dhir Dhare" from the old Film : Chitralekha. Now if you compare all these songs, you will notice that all of these songs use same Bandishi or Pakkad. Bandishi or Pakkad of any given Raga is the set of dominating notes which defines the soul of that Raga. So with comparison of all these songs by humming, you will learn the Bandishi of Raga Yaman Kalyan which will help you in identifying any other song or tune based on Raga Yaman Kalyan.
