The process of extracting gold from the bottom of the river involve a dredge ,a carpet and later a mixer. The water, the sand and the gold are sucked by the lance dredged from the bottom of the river- the gold and sand stays in the carpet - later the carpet is shaken in a reservoir, a dose of mercury is added to attract the gold and then later the mixture is burned- yielding the 95% gold. The process of dredging runs for every 24 hours which averages between 20 ounces to 5 kilos day.
That's the way it is on a garimpo on the Madeira River. You might get rich, but there was lot of dangers in doing so, violence and the fever that comes from the sickness called malaria is common.
The gold miners- garimpeiros - after selling their proceeds- would take their big earnings to a city called Porto Velho. They'd party hard for days, and soon their earnings would be spent and they became poor again, just to head back to the garimpo and take their chances once again.

  • In regards to amount of mercury definitely is not. 80%. the amount of mercury is minimal just enough to attract the gold.. regarding to taxes on gold mining .. each state has his own tax rates..going from 9% to 35%..in the case above - rondonia - the taxes were very high at the time this video was shot ( 80's) .. it was one of the reasons great amount of the gold mined in that state was smuggled to other states with small tax rates.

  • How can you extract gold from dust?

Collect them and use mercury or something??

  • The sand and the gold is dregged with water and settle on the carpet.. every 24 hours the carpet is removed and agitated on top of a barrel- then mercury is added- with a mixer the mercury -sand and gold is combined. the mercury attracts the gold - the mixture gold and mercury is removed and burned- at the end of the process just gold is extracted. In this region ,Madeira river the gold is between 24-carat gold (99.9%) and 18-carat gold (75%), approximately 87%.

  • It seem like much investing cost

  • The investment is about 100,000 US dollars. the average daily pure gold gross are 35 oz on that region, Madera River .
