@aztecsun12 Ps. and some of the other, older cities, like those in Belize, were still occupied when the Spanish came - but they were abandoned and forgotten AFTER the Spanish converted the people (or most of them) Examples are Altun Ha and Lamanai, they were still around when the Conquistadors came. It was the Spanish who made the Mayans desert those cities, even though they were far past their glory.

They didn't dissapear, they relocated, or at least some of them did. at the time of the Conquistadors there were still Mayan cities, though the classic Mayan cities were abandonned around 900 ad.(perhaps due to an uprising or wars?)
Maybe you should look up Tayasal, Izamal, Zacpeten and Ixmiche, fully functioning Mayan cities which were conquered and destroyed by the Spanish - with some help of the diseases they brought with them (at least in the case of Ixmiche)

i wonder what happened to the mayans. some say they were conquered, others say they abandoned their homes, but who really knows? they kept records of everything. theres no doubt they made human sacrifices, controlled time, studied stars, and made predictions=observations, but its interesting how they never mentioned a thing about how they banished
