Innovative Ideas Fueled the 2010 Chem-E-Car Competiton

July 22, 2010 -- The 5th Malaysian Chem-E-Car Competition 2010, organised by The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), was held at the SEGi University College (SEGi UC) Multipurpose Hall at its' main campus in Kota Damansara today.
This competition is a positive platform which aims to provide the opportunity for students from Institutions of Higher Learning to showcase their creativity and technical knowledge in the field of chemical engineering through the development of a model car.
Open to undergraduate engineering students, the competition is divided into two parts, comprising a model car competition and a poster presentation. The model car competition required students to power their model car using either a chemical cell or fuel cell across a set distance while carrying a specified load of water.
The poster presentation gave students the opportunity to present their model cars and describe the propulsion system as well as the innovative and creative ideas they have made in areas such as propulsion system, safety, environmental issues, efficiency etc.
The international competition saw twenty four participating teams from ten local universities as well as two international entries from the National University of Singapore and the first ever entry from a private institution of higher learning, namely TATI University College from Terengganu.
On the day, University Teknologi Petronas' car UTP-i Green that emerged as the overall champions in the model car competition, taking home the grand prize of USD 1,000. The second place, taking home prize money amounting to USD 700, went to University Kebangsaan Malaysia, while the third place, with prize money amounting to USD 500, went to University Malaysia's KimiKar.
In the Poster design competition, Team Perky from National University of Singapore took home the first prize, while team Aluven from University Sabah Malaysia came in second place and University Sains Malaysia's team Sexy-baby came in third place.
The Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Y.B. Tuan Haji Fadillah bin Haji Yusof, was the guest of honour at the closing and prize giving ceremony and conferred the prizes to the winning teams.
During his address to the participating teams, Y.B Tuan Haji outlined MOSTI's commitment in improving competitiveness in the fields of science and technology through the generation of knowledge and sustainable development while also increasing the number of researchers, scientists and engineers in the country to achieve a ratio of 50:10,000 labour force in priority areas by 2010.
According to the Ministry, the efforts of the participating teams are also vital due to the depletion of natural resources which, if consumption continues at the current rate, will only last a few more decades. Thus, the Deputy Minister urged the younger generation to continue with their endeavors, highlighting that their inventions and innovations could one day lead to finding a solution to the very real energy crisis, or at the very least result in developing inspired young Engineers for the country in the future.
Also present at the closing and prize giving ceremony representing SEGi UC was Emeritus Professor Dr. Muhamad Awang -- Vice Chancellor, and representing IEM was Ir. MC Hee -- Vice President.
The Malaysian Chem-E-Car Competition was first organized by IEM in 2004 and has since developed into a well renowned competition, with many universities now holding internal competitions to decide who will represent them in the national competition.
Today, the annual Malaysian Chem-E-Car Competition is considered to be the most anticipated event in chemical engineering.
