The very gruesome part two of x-men: birth of the phoenix. This story of jean's encounter with the phoenix force was told as a backup story in an x-men reprint title.

  • I think Marvel Comics should have left the saga as it was without adding the later explanation about the phoenix force and all that. I remember when I was a kid and reading her tragedy in Uncanny X-Men #137 and being genuinely moved to tears because her death was final at the time. It wasn't supposed to be like a soap opera, like oops, she isn't really dead after all, it was just a bad dream. Blah.

  • @WoodLawnHills Well if its any consolation, no character is dead forever. I remember picking that issue up at the local drug store when it came out. I was supposed to take a long bike ride with friends that day, but I said forget it I gotta read x-men! Jim shooter sure did hose things up by demanding her death for wiping out a planet of aspargas people.

  • Interestingly enough -- originally the Phoenix wasn't a cosmic entity psionically linked to Jean Grey, she *was* Jean at the very peak of her powers. But due to the events of the Dark Phoenix Saga, the only way the creators could bring Jean back was to separate Phoenix from Jean. I'm not going to explain the Dark Phoenix Saga -- that's too long a story to tell here.

  • Right, thanks to jim shooter who was the editor-in-chief at the time who said jean had to die for wiping out that planet of 'asparagus' people.

  • @BelleBook so where does the Mkran crystal fit in...???

  • can some one pleas explain to me the Wight Phoenix?

  • Yeah. The original plan was to have Jean depowered but retain the possibility of the Dark Phoenix returning. Thus they could bring back Jean and the Dark Phoenix for future storylines. If Claremont hadn't decided to have the Dark Phoenix destroy an *inhabited* solar system, they might have done so successfully. But Shooter felt the punishment was too light for what was essentially genocide. *That's* why he wanted Jean to pay the full price or else be cleared of the crime.
