Thiruvarur Bhakthavatsalam was born in a family of traditional musicians and received his training from his uncle and noted mrudanga vidwan Sri Tiruvarur Krishnamurthy and from his mother Smt. T. R. Anandavalli. He started performing at the age of nine and has toured widely, including US, Australia, the Festival of Indian Music in the UK, Music Festival during the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. Bhakthavatsalam has accompanied many leading artistes of Carnatic music and has also played many jugalbandhi concerts. He is the recipient of many awards and titles including Mrudanga Vadhya Mani by Kanchi Mutt, Kalaimamani by Tamil Nadu Government, etc.
