Very nice project indeed. I wish more of this valuable video programs can be seen on the public TV channels for the future generation. May be your family can be a part of this new avenue to inspire more young people and tighten the family ties at the same time. I am sure this kind of family project is much more fun than playing time wasting viloent video games and watching nonsense cartoons. Thanks for sharing.

two things:
Don't use sand from a sand box because play sand is known as the fav. cat litter box of the neighborhood, & using sand that has been contaminated with cat feces can make you very sick!
Also, be sure your charcoal/carbon is NOT from COAL sources, but from wood, coconut, etc.
Coal contains some VERY nasty things like heavy metals. The give away sometimes is the word "bituminous". That means it's from a coal source.
Also is your "cotton" 100% cotton, or is it polyester? Thanks!

oh yeah and one more thing. since u put the materials in the jar/container, could i put it seperately, like in different containers, or will it not work

@EggsofFlames The Sand is filters the next to finest particles and reduces the work required by the charcoal. You can purchase the charcoal (activated carbon) at a pet supply store that sells fish and aquarium materials.

oh um, im wondering for my design challenge, i dunt wanna fully copy ur idea, so my friend and i thought of another way, but do i have to put sand? if i dont will the water be dirty. oh, and where'd you buy the charcoal :)
Hello. we purchased construction sand used for leveling. It said it was prewashed but we were not happy with the results. The Active carbon that we purchased came from a pet supply store and is used for filtering aquatic tanks.
The cotton, was cotton and I believe we purchased it at the same pet supply store. I do not recall what it was sold as in the store, but I recall feeling lucky to not have to shop at another store. I believe the active carbon was about $25 for less than a kilogram.
